The 23-year old Unnao rape case survivor who was burnt alive on Thursday by two accused died on Friday night at Delhi’s Safdarjung Hospital after battling for life for almost 40 hours. Suffering from 90% burns, the victim had been kept on ventilator at the hospital and was extremely critical. “She suffered cardiac arrest at 11:10 pm and we tried to resuscitate her, but she could not survive and at 11:40 pm she died,” Dr. Shalabh Kumar, HOD (Burns and plastic) at Safdarjung Hospital said as reported.
After her death, the victim's body was transferred to the hospital's forensic department where a post mortem examination will be conducted, following which her body will be handed over to her family. The post mortem reports will be given to the police, hospital sources said. The woman was set afire by five men, including two of her alleged rapists, on Thursday morning when she was going to Rae Bareli to attend a court hearing in the rape case filed by her.
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath Saturday said the death of the Unnao rape victim was ‘extremely sad’ and announced that the case will be tried in a fast-track court.
In an official statement today, Adityanath said, “All the accused persons have been arrested. The case will be taken to a fast-track court, and punishment will be given.”
