MumbaiWhen actor Suniel Shetty entered the film industry in the 1990s, his muscular physique, powerful voice and distinctive action style immediately caught the audience’s attention. However, there was another lesser-known aspect of his life before he entered films. Acting was not his first passion. During his childhood and teenage years, he was deeply interested in cricket and took the sport seriously. However, destiny eventually brought him into the world of Bollywood.
Suniel Shetty was born on August 11, 1961, in Mulki, Karnataka. His family later moved to Mumbai, where he completed his education. He grew up in a modest environment. At the time, cricket was extremely popular among young people in India. He began playing cricket and gradually started taking the sport seriously. It was also during this period that he began focusing on building his physique.
In an interview, Suniel had revealed that when he was around 14 years old, he saw legendary West Indies batsman Vivian Richards. He was highly impressed by Richards’ strong arms and shoulders and asked how one could develop such a strong physique. He was told that weight training was the way to achieve it. Suniel then started weight training. At the time, he probably had no idea that this habit of building his physique would later become one of the defining aspects of his identity as an actor.
Suniel also revealed that he played in Mumbai’s Under-16 cricket setup. During this period, he played under the leadership of Ravi Shastri. His dream of pursuing cricket was progressing, but he gradually realised that making it into the team would be extremely difficult. Suniel felt that moving ahead solely on the strength of cricket would not be easy for him. As a result, he began focusing more on martial arts and fitness instead of cricket.
Martial arts gave his life a new direction. His physique became stronger and his confidence also grew. Around the same time, he developed an interest in business as well. However, destiny had something else in store for him. He got an opportunity to work in films and made his Bollywood debut with the 1992 film 'Balwaan'. His muscular physique and action-oriented style were well received by audiences. He subsequently appeared in films such as 'Waqt Hamara Hai', 'Mohra', 'Dilwale', 'Ant', 'Krishna' and 'Gopi Kishan'.
Suniel Shetty did not restrict himself to action films during his career. He also explored comedy, romance and serious roles. His portrayal of Shyam in 'Hera Pheri' became one of the most memorable performances of his career. His trio with Akshay Kumar and Paresh Rawal was widely loved by audiences. Films such as 'Dhadkan', 'Main Hoon Na' and 'Phir Hera Pheri' also added new milestones to his career. Over the years, he established himself in the business world alongside his acting career.
He has received several awards and honours for his work in films. He also won a Filmfare Award for his performance in 'Dhadkan'. Suniel Shetty has remained active in Bollywood for several decades and continues to be associated with films across different genres. He was recently seen in 'Welcome to the Jungle'.
