Speculation has long been rife about tensions between the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Political analysts have been busy drawing equations over the appointment of the BJP’s national president. However, PM Modi recently unsettled these calculations by praising RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat in one of his articles. Adding to the intrigue, Bhagwat’s recent statement in Nagpur on American tariffs has given a fresh twist to the perceived chemistry between the two leaders.
It all began when Mohan Bhagwat first raised the issue of the 75-year age limit, indirectly hinting that PM Modi should consider retirement. Analysts interpreted this as a sign of friction over the selection of the BJP president. Later, however, Bhagwat clarified in Delhi that no one is retiring at 75, not even himself. He further stated that the BJP president is not chosen by the RSS, adding that if it were so, the decision would not have taken so long. Analysts also connected this with his remarks that the RSS would not participate in movements on issues like Mathura and Kashi, though swayamsevaks were free to act independently.
Amid this backdrop, Modi’s praise for the RSS from the Red Fort and his subsequent article lauding Bhagwat has left many observers perplexed. Just a day earlier, the RSS chief had remarked—without naming any country—that tariffs were being imposed on India to prevent it from becoming stronger. He said that foreign powers fear: “If India becomes strong, what will happen to us?” This was widely seen as supportive of Modi’s position.
Now, speculation is rife that in the coming days the RSS and the Modi-Shah leadership may reach an agreement over the next BJP president, and an official announcement could follow soon.
