ITR filing deadline for taxpayers covered by audit extended from October 31 to November 21; tax audit report deadline extended to October 21

The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT), under the Department of Revenue, Ministry of Finance, has extended the deadlines for filing Income Tax Returns (ITR) and Tax Audit Reports for taxpayers covered under audit provisions of the Income Tax Act, 1961, for Assessment Year 2026-27.
According to the official press release cited in the source, the extension has been granted under the relevant provisions of the Income Tax Act, providing additional time to taxpayers and tax professionals to complete the required compliance.
ITR Filing Deadline Extended to November 21
For taxpayers covered under the audit provisions specified in the table referred to in Section 139(1), Explanation 2, of the Income Tax Act, the due date for filing the ITR for AY 2026-27 was earlier October 31, 2026.
The CBDT has now extended this deadline to November 21, 2026.
Tax Audit Report Deadline Extended to October 21
The specified date for furnishing the Tax Audit Report, which was earlier September 30, 2026, has also been extended.
Under the revised schedule, the Tax Audit Report will now have to be submitted by October 21, 2026.
Formal Orders and Notification to Follow
According to the statement issued by V. Rajitha, Income Tax Commissioner (Media & Technical Policy) and official spokesperson, formal orders and the notification relating to the extension of these deadlines are being issued separately.
The extension is applicable to the relevant taxpayers and audit cases covered by the provisions mentioned in the CBDT announcement.
