Jammu. At least five people were killed on Saturday after a vehicle fell into the Chenab River in Jammu and Kashmir’s Kishtwar district.
Union Minister of State in the Prime Minister’s Office, Dr. Jitendra Singh, said on X that he spoke to Kishtwar Deputy Commissioner Pankaj Kumar Sharma after receiving information about the road accident in the Dachhan area.
He said, “After receiving a report about the road accident in the Dachhan area, I spoke to Kishtwar DC Pankaj Kumar Sharma. A Scorpio vehicle fell into a deep gorge at Yaivan. Unfortunately, all five passengers in the vehicle died at the spot. My deepest condolences to the bereaved families.”
According to the information available, the accident occurred at around 10:30 a.m. on Saturday. The vehicle fell into a deep gorge near Tender Nala at Yaivan in the Dachhan area.
All five occupants of the vehicle died at the scene. Authorities have not yet released the identities of the deceased.
The hilly districts of Doda, Kishtwar, Poonch, Rajouri, Reasi, Ramban and Udhampur are known for serious road accidents. Experts attribute such accidents to factors including poor road conditions, speeding, overloading, road rage and reckless driving.
The Traffic Department has deployed special teams to monitor and investigate such violations. The Regional Transport Offices (RTOs) in Jammu and the Kashmir Valley also regularly create awareness about the penalties for traffic violations.
If a minor is caught driving a vehicle, the parents may face a fine as well as imprisonment.
Driving without a valid licence can result in cancellation of a vehicle’s registration certificate. A driver with a valid licence may also have the licence cancelled for reckless driving.
Petrol pumps have been advised not to provide fuel to two-wheeler riders who arrive at filling stations without wearing crash helmets.
Stunt biking by young people on roads and highways is another major traffic-related concern. Authorities may take measures such as counselling, involving parents, cancelling the vehicle’s registration certificate and imposing fines in such cases.
Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha also expressed grief over the incident.
In a post on X, he said he was deeply saddened by the tragic road accident in Dachhan, Kishtwar, in which five people lost their lives. He expressed his deepest condolences to the bereaved families and said he had directed the district administration and senior officials to provide immediate assistance to those affected.
