Season 9 of the popular celebrity chat show to premiere on JioStar from October 14
Mumbai:
Filmmaker and television host Karan Johar has announced the final season of his popular celebrity chat show ‘Koffee with Karan’. The filmmaker shared an emotional video on social media, looking back at the show’s journey and revealing that the upcoming ninth season will be its last.
Karan said the idea of hosting a talk show came to him during a conversation with his late father and renowned film producer Yash Johar. Recalling the beginning of the journey, he said that in June 2004, he told his father that he wanted to host a talk show where he could invite two celebrities or stars and have candid conversations with them.
According to Karan, his father jokingly asked why anyone would pay him to simply invite his friends and talk to them. Yash Johar passed away later that month, on June 26, 2004.
Karan recalled that the first episode of ‘Koffee with Karan’ was shot on August 16, 2004. Since then, the show has completed eight seasons and 161 episodes, spanning more than two decades.
Announcing the final season on Instagram, Karan wrote that it was time to talk over coffee one more time. ‘Hotstar Specials: Koffee with Karan Season 9’ will premiere on JioStar on October 14.
Talking about the decision to conclude the show, Karan said some journeys are not planned to end, but there comes a time when one knows it is time to let them go. He described ‘Koffee with Karan’ as a very special part of his life that gave him friendships, memories, humorous moments, love and controversies.
Karan also credited the show’s audience for being a constant presence throughout its long journey. He said viewers laughed with the show, debated, trolled and celebrated it, while continuing to return for another cup of coffee.
Describing the final season as an emotional farewell, Karan said it was his way of raising the coffee mug one last time with gratitude and love for everyone who helped make the show what it is today.
Alok Jain, Head of Hindi and English Entertainment at JioStar, also reflected on the show’s journey. He said that ‘Koffee with Karan’ brought some of the biggest celebrities into viewers’ homes and created a fan base that few shows have been able to match.
The final season of ‘Koffee with Karan’ will stream on JioStar from October 14.
