The Supreme Court Collegium has recommended Justice Sanjay K. Agrawal, a senior judge of the Chhattisgarh High Court, for appointment as the new Chief Justice of the Rajasthan High Court. The Collegium, headed by the Chief Justice of India, took this important decision at its meeting held on August 31, 2026.
Recommendation for Regular Chief Justice: The Supreme Court Collegium has proposed the elevation of Justice Sanjay K. Agrawal from the Chhattisgarh High Court to the position of regular Chief Justice of the Rajasthan High Court.
Proposal for Immediate Transfer: The Collegium has also recommended that Justice Agrawal be transferred to the Rajasthan High Court with immediate effect, pending completion of the formal appointment process. This would enable him to take charge as the senior-most judge of the court.
Background: Born on July 15, 1965, Justice Sanjay K. Agrawal has served as the Advocate General of Chhattisgarh. He was appointed an Additional Judge of the Chhattisgarh High Court in September 2013 and became a permanent judge in March 2016.
Recent Developments: The Collegium's recommendation comes amid administrative controversies surrounding Acting Chief Justice Sanjeev Prakash Sharma of the Rajasthan High Court and protests by lawyers demanding the appointment of a regular Chief Justice.
Once the Central Government and the President issue the formal notification, Justice Sanjay K. Agrawal will take the oath of office and secrecy as the new Chief Justice of the Rajasthan High Court.
