India’s men’s kabaddi team won the gold medal at the Asian Games 2026 after defeating Iran 40-34 in a closely contested final. Led by captain Sunil Kumar, the Indian team successfully defended its title and secured gold for the second consecutive Asian Games.
The final began with a fiercely competitive battle between India and Iran. Iran’s star defender Fazel Atrachali, along with his defensive unit, tried to put pressure on the Indian raiders. The score remained level at 5-5 during the opening eight minutes. India then gained a slight advantage and moved ahead 10-8. Rahul was also shown a green card during this phase.
Arjun Deshwal produced a series of impressive raids as India extended its lead to 12-9. However, Iran responded strongly through its defence and managed to inflict an all-out on India, taking a 14-13 lead. Iran maintained its advantage and went into half-time leading 18-17.
The second half continued in the same intense fashion. India’s raiders had to work hard against Iran’s strong defensive setup. The Indian team, however, staged an excellent comeback and gradually took control of the match. India opened up a crucial 34-27 lead and put Iran under pressure.
Sumit delivered a strong performance in defence for India, while Arjun Deshwal continued to collect crucial points through his raids. Rahul also produced an important tackle in the closing stages, helping India extend its advantage to 36-29.
Iran attempted to close the gap during the final minutes but made several mistakes while trying to level the score. India capitalised on those errors and maintained its composure to seal a 40-34 victory and retain the Asian Games men’s kabaddi gold medal.
India had also defeated Iran in the final of the previous Asian Games to win the title. Earlier, India’s women’s kabaddi team also claimed gold after defeating Iran 37-34 in a closely fought final.
