India records 97,894 new Covid-19 cases and 1132 deaths in 24 hours, tally crosses 51 lakh

India reported 97,894 new oronavirus infections in 24 hours, taking its tally past the 51-lakh mark. With 51,18,253 infections, India is the world's second-worst affected country, and trails only the United States, which has a caseload of around 66 lakh. In the 24-hour period, India reported 1,132 deaths linked to the virus, taking the total number of fatalities to 83,198. As of Thursday, the case tally stands at 51,18,254 including 10,09,976 active cases, 40,25,080 cured/discharged/migrated and 83,198 deaths, as per the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare

Meanwhile, India's Covid-19 testing crossed the 6-crore mark on Thursday with over 11 lakh samples tested for coronavirus on Wednesday alone. As per the official figures, the fatality rate in India is at 1.63 % while the recovery rate is at 78.53%.

Maharashtra remains the worst affected state by the pandemic with a tally of over 10.7 lakh cases. More than 37 per cent of cumulative deaths reported so far in the country are from the western state.

While Maharashtra has 2,97,506 active cases, the highest in the country, Karnataka with 1,01,645 cases, Uttar Pradesh (96,7002), Andhra Pradesh (90,279) and Delhi (30,914) are also on the list. Maharashtra along with Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka are currently contributing 49 per cent to India's total active cases and 52 per cent of total deaths.

Delhi reported its highest single-day spike on Wednesday as 4,473 fresh cases were reported in the national capital. Delhi's COVID-19 tally now stands at 2.30 lakh.
