India's COVID-19 tally is close to 76 lakhs but for the first time in nearly three months, the country has recorded less than 50,000 new cases in a day. The health ministry reported 46,790 fresh cases in the last 24 hours, which takes the overall cases to 75,97,063. In the past 24 hours, 587 coronavirus positive patients have succumbed to the infection, taking the death toll in the country to 1,15,197. As of Tuesday, there are 7,48,538 active cases in India. A total of 67,33,329 people have recovered from the disease -- a rise by 69,721 since Monday.
On Monday, coronavirus cases in India crossed the 75-lakh lakh as the country detected a spike of 55,722 fresh Covid-19 infections.
Maharashtra, the state with highest number of cases, reported about 6,000 new cases - almost a third of what it did during its peak. Some 5,000 new cases were reported from Kerala and Karnataka, followed by West Bengal with almost 4,000 cases, and Tamil Nadu with 3,500 cases. Together these states account for 47 per cent of all cases in the country.
