India`s Covid-19 tally crosses 56 lakh, death toll exceeds 90,000

India’s coronavirus tally has crossed 56 lakh after the country reported a single-day spike of 83,347 cases on Wednesday. The country’s total Covid-19 death toll has also crossed the 90,000-mark after 1,085 deaths were reported in the last 24 hours. The number of active cases in India has fallen by almost 90,000 in the last 24 hours. India now has 9,68,377 active cases while the number of people who have recovered has increased to 45, 87,613.

This coincided with over 1 lakh recoveries in one day for the first time taking the country's Recovery Rate to 80.86 per cent. The total number of recovered patients is almost 45 lakh while India’s case fatality rate is 1.60 per cent.

The government also said that India’s daily Covid testing capacity has gone up to over 12 lakh and over 6.5 crore tests have been conducted so far. According to the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), 6,62,79,462 samples have been tested up to September 22.

Maharashtra remains the worst affected state in India but it has been reporting a higher number of recoveries in comparison to daily infections. A total of 33,015 people have died in the state due to the novel coronavirus.

Meanwhile, Delhi has been witnessing a sharp surge in cases over the past few weeks. The total number of active cases in the national capital has gone up to 30,941.

On the contrary, 14 states in India are witnessing lower positive rates, confirmed the health ministry. Some of these states are Mizoram, Manipur, Arunachal Pradesh, Gujarat, Sikkim, Tripura, J&K (UT), Odisha, Assam, Punjab and Uttarakhand.
