Google Doodle today: Who was Hans Christian Gram & what did he discover

Today's Google Doodle celebrates Danish microbiologist Hans Christian Gram's 166th birthday. Gram was born on September 13, 1853, in Copenhagen, Denmark. He invented a technique to identify and classify different types of bacteria, which is used even today.

The Danish microbiologist gained international recognition for his development of the Gram stain – a method of staining bacteria, to make them more noticeable under a microscope. The art illustrates Gram's work from his experiments to a closer look of bacteria under the microscope. The beautiful art in the doodle was created by Mikkel Sommer, a Danish guest artist.

The Danish microbiologist earned an M.D. from the University of Copenhagen in 1878. He then traveled through Europe between 1883 to 1885 studying pharmacology and bacteriology.

Gram developed the technique during his work with German microbiologist Karl Friedlander in the morgue of the city hospital in Berlin in 1884. He initially devised his technique for the purpose of making bacteria more visible in stained sections of lung tissue. While working in the lab of Friedlander, he noticed that treating a smear of bacteria with a crystal violet stain, followed by an iodine solution and an organic solvent, revealed differences in the structure and biochemical function of various samples.
