Aam Aadmi Party MLA Atishi targeted the BJP over the Delhi bus rape case and expressed concern about the safety of women. Speaking to news agency IANS, Atishi said that the Uttar Pradesh government is run by the BJP, as is the Delhi government. She pointed out that both the Uttar Pradesh Police and Delhi Police are under the BJP’s administration, while the Lieutenant Governor is also appointed by the BJP-led government and the Ministry of Home Affairs is under BJP control.
“Is there any power centre left that is not controlled by the BJP? And yet, a 16-year-old girl is raped on a bus travelling from Noida to Delhi, and the entire country is witnessing this,” she said.
Atishi asked the BJP how long girls in the country would continue to suffer and face violence. She said the BJP has been in power at the Centre for 12 to 13 years, but it has become clear that those who commit rape and violence against women do not fear the government, the police or the courts.
She further alleged that the accused believe the police will not take effective action. According to her, even if the police make an arrest, the accused may eventually reach a settlement and obtain bail.
According to the police, the Class 11 student, who is from Mainpuri district in Uttar Pradesh, had left home without informing her family after an argument with her relatives. She was travelling to her cousin’s home in Noida.
Due to heavy rain and darkness, the girl mistakenly got off at Pari Chowk in Greater Noida. Around that time, an empty sleeper bus passed by. The girl signalled the bus to stop, and the vehicle pulled over. The driver and conductor told her that they were going towards Noida Sector 63 and allowed her to board the bus.
A short while after the bus started moving, the conductor allegedly began behaving inappropriately with the girl. According to the victim, the driver and conductor subsequently raped her and threatened to kill her if she resisted.
The accused allegedly dropped the victim late at night on Ring Road near the Kashmere Gate bus terminal and fled the scene.
