Claude Monet, the painter, was most famous for his Impressionist paintings. Only a few of his paintings remain as part of private collection. Recently, one of those paintings from his 'haystack' collections was sold for a record-breaking price. On Tuesday, the painting was sold for Rs 7,78,61,39,850 (USD 110.7 million), breaking the previous records for Impressionist work.
The painting, titled 'Meules', is an oil on canvas and was completed in the year 1890. It is the first ever piece of Impressionist art to cross the USD 100 million mark. It is also the highest amount ever paid at an auction for a Monet painting. Monet died at the age of 86 in the year 1926. Monet was the founder of French Impressionism and was known as the master of plein air landscapes.
The painting, Mueles, was one of the 25 paintings of a series that depict stacks of harvested wheat that belonged to Monet's neighbour. It was only one of the four paintings that were part of the auction this year.
