30 minutes of exercise, 5 days a week keep breast cancer at bay

Breast cancer is the most frequently-diagnosed cancer globally and is the leading cause of cancer-related death in women. In the last couple of decades, breast cancer-related mortality has shown a declining trend because of early detection and improved treatment.

Numerous risk factors of this disease have been established; these include increasing age, family history of breast cancer, early menarche, late menopause, older age at first child birth, genetic mutations (BRCA1 or 2) and lifestyle factors such as increased body mass index (BMI) and alcohol consumption.

Lifestyle changes such as diet, body weight, exercise and alcohol consumption are some of the modifiable risk factors for this disease. As surgical oncologists, it is our moral duty to promote overall health and encourage women to make choices and changes compatible with a healthy lifestyle.

Increased level of physical activity in the form of regular exercise is associated with a decreased risk for breast cancer, and this has been validated by numerous studies. A study including more than 90,000 women between the ages of 40 and 65 showed that women who reported more than five hours of vigorous exercise per week were less likely to have breast cancer than women who did not participate in physical activities.
